Daily Protein Requirements

I have read many different things about daily protein requirement. Some say 2 to 2.5 grams per pound you weigh per day, others 1 to 1.5, others even less. which is correct? and from what source should the protein be? for instance, I know that meat doesnt have as high assimilation as milk.
