To most bodybuilders losing fat and putting on muscle is a paradox as many think that the only way to put on muscle is to eat like a horse and only worry about losing fat when cutting up for a competition. But losing fat and putting on muscle are not mutually-exclusive.

Muscle is not only two and a half times heavier than fat but it is also going to use up three times more calories than fat to maintain the muscle. This alone will speed up your metabolism when you have muscle. But you can still gain more muscle without having to put on fat first.

There are a number of ways to go about this and it needs to be a bit extreme but it can easily become a simple way of life eventually. Effective additions in your daily diet like creatine and the creatine/carb/protein mix that you have in your meals can be a vital factor in achieving muscle gain without gaining fat.

The first is the cardio workouts that you do which should be around 60% of your maximum heart-rate and be done at least three times a week in order to keep your metabolism running as fast as possible. Sports science has proven that your metabolic rate will speed up for 8 hours after a workout.

Weight training should be done in the afternoon or early evening in order to get the best results. Sports science shows that in order to get the continued benefit of your weight training sessions you should make sure that you are getting a minimum of 6 hours between your weight training sessions and your bedtime as dinner will be an over feeding when you replenish glycogen stores and drive protein synthesis.

Training correctly with high intensity and heavy weights is as you already know is the best training method in order to gain muscle. Briefly the answer to get the best returns on your workouts is by eating correctly.

This means splitting your meals between high quality protein, complex carbohydrates and good quality fat like virgin oil or fish oil for the Omega-3 benefits. Along with eating at least 5 times a day and drinking lots of water on a daily basis you will find that gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time is not impossible.
