Can Creatine be Used for Weight Loss
The question "can creatine be used for weight loss" needs a bit of explanation on why one would ask that question in the first place, considering that creatine was put on the market for muscle weight gain and not weight loss. But the truth is that creatine could well be used for weight loss for some rather complicated reasons.
We need to cover some basic cell function in order to get this explained correctly as it all happens on a cellular level to kick-start your "Creatine Shuffle" in order to activate your aerobic recovery process to start with the muscle repair. It is this aerobic activity within the mitochondria that will cause Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC).
Before going any farther we need to examine the "Creatine Shuttle" a bit farther. It is a mechanism that is able to take the leftover Creatine that comes from the breakdown of phosphocreatine, which it then pushes directly into the cellular mitochondria.
The mitochondria are the workhouses of your cells where energy is produced and this is done in the mitochondria where aerobic metabolism gets started. What is actually happening here is that there is a switch from anaerobic metabolism to aerobic metabolism, both of which have one primary goal and that is to produce ATP as quickly as possible.
Science has proven that that EPOC increases your metabolism and helps you burn more calories for up to 36 hours after exercise. All successful diet and weight-loss companies will tell you that in order to get the maximum amount of benefit from dieting you need to exercise on a regular basis.
The paradox that exists between creatine used for weight gain and weight loss sounds a bit far-fetched but the truth is that it is theoretically very possible. Unfortunately this has not yet been allocated the specific funding it requires to study if this is true yet, but it surely will happen soon.
In conclusion it needs to be explained exactly what we mean when we say weight loss. Because weight loss and fat loss are not the same thing and when you increase the amount of muscle on your body your metabolism speed up and you burn more calories while you are sleeping.
When you put on muscle then gaining weight is easy because muscle to two and a half times heavier than fat but it uses ten times as many calories per hour to keep it alive and healthy. The result is that weight loss should rather focus on fat loss and measure the change in your waistline rather than watching the scale.
