How to Lose Fat and Gain Lean Muscle

Most people's ultimate training goal is a dual target – losing fat and adding lean muscle. For losing fat there are two prime tools - heavy duty weightlifting and a smart diet that is employed consistently. Weight training has a dual effect of burning fat and building muscle when that weightlifting is the right type. And that type of weightlifting that does this is compound movements with a heavy weight load. That's the starting point for losing fat and building lean muscle. This translates into squats, deadlifts, clean and press, heavy bench press and other similar compound action. In conjunction with this, a dietary approach can help tremendously. Start with a low carb diet for a few weeks. Going low carb will immediately help you burn off fat. But don't go wholesale on low carbs. Instead, allow yourself some complex and even some simple carbs on workout days. But on non workout days, really drop the carb intake to minimal levels - only a third of what you would normally take. Allow yourself a minimal amount of complex carbs on these days. Stick with the low carb approach for several weeks, then switch over to a more mainline diet for a few weeks. Alternate back and forth between your standard diet and a low carb diet, spending a few weeks on each. By starting with the low carb you set your body up to burn off fat. And by not going too extreme (rotating out of the low carb) you keep the body from cutting into your muscle tissue. Use this rotational approach while pouring on the compound training and watch the fat come right off your physique, and the muscle will stand out in relief.
