Swimming for Fitness

Swimming is a fitness activity that can be don for you entire
lifetime, the health and fitness benefits of swimming are well
worth the effort it takes to get to a pool.

Health Benefits of Swimming

Swimming is an excellent fitness activity. It tones your entire
body while providing a great cardio workout, it also strengthens
your heart and lungs.

Swimming burns approximately 350 to 420 calories per hour.

There are also mental benefits to swimming, it can give you a
feeling of well-being, and make you feel refreshed after a
stressful day.

Swimming Basics

Most fitness centers, schools and YMCA or YWCA have pools
and swimming classes. Hotels and motels have pools that
often offer memberships for the local residents.

Swimming can be used as a workout all by itself or to add to
your regular workouts. Before a workout, you can use swimming
for a warm-up. Also after a workout, swimming can help you
cool-down, relax and move blood through your muscles to help
them recover.

If you are just beginning, start out slowly. Try to swim for
10 minutes. Work up to a 30 minutes, three to five times a
week.

Try interval training, this involves pushing yourself hard
for short spurts, and then dropping back to a less-intense
pace, going back and forth between harder and easier
levels of exercise.
