Cutting Calories for Weight Loss

Losing weight can be easy.  You just need to remember a few simple rules about food to help you reach your goals.  Did you know that by cutting around 500 calories out of your diet each day, you can lose 1 pound per week (1 pound is approximately 3500 calories).

Another secret is that you donít have to eat 500 less calories to do it.  This is something that many people donít fully realize.  If you can cut 200 or 300 calories and use exercise to burn the other 200 or 300, you will end up with the same result.

You may be asking, ďHow much exercise will I have to do to burn 200 calories?Ē  Well, it may just be simpler than you think.  Walking a mile burns about 100 calories.  You donít have to walk that distance all at once either.  You can try parking your car a little further away from the door when you go to work or the mall.  You can also try taking the stairs for trips of only a level of two.  Any other form of exercise will work too, but something like walking is something that virtually everyone can do year round.

To cut some calories out of your diet you can try some of the following:

  • Try dried fruit for a delicious snack
  • Drink nonfat or low fat milk instead of whole milk
  • Use skim milk in your recipes instead of whole milk
  • Air-popped popcorn is very filling and makes a great snack (go easy on any butter or salt you add)
  • Take the skin off of your chicken before you eat it
  • Fat-free sour cream and mayonnaise instead of the regular varieties
  • Take carrot sticks to work with you instead of a chocolate bar
  • Try to reduce the amount of processed meats you put in your sandwich (substitute with lettuce, tomato, sprouts)
  • Have some fish instead of beef for a change
  • You can probably think of more that would fit with your lifestyle

The key point is that you can lose weight by reducing a little in a lot of areas.  The goal is to reduce your calories in a way that you wonít make you crave for them and to get a little exercise in the form or walking, biking, climbing stairs, or anything else that will make your muscles do a little work to help you reach your weight loss goals.
