Are bodybuilding supplements necessary to maximize bodybuilding regimens and what can they do for me? This is a common question when someone undertakes bodybuilding training. The consensus among successful bodybuilders is that they are not absolutely necessary; but they are necessary if you want to attain the most muscle size and strength gain that you can. There are five supplements that are recommended because of what they can do for you:

What Bodybuilding Supplements Do

1. Whey Protein – The biggest problem many bodybuilders have is getting high levels of protein in their diets. Whey is one of the two main proteins in milk. When milk is made into cheese, whey is the byproduct. Whey protein, which is easily digested and used by the body, contains a lot of amino acids. Amino acids are known to help in the development of new muscle mass and sustaining that muscle mass. Whey protein powders may be the most important protein for muscle building.

2. Creatine – Creatine is one of the top sports supplements being used today. Creatine is produced naturally in the body. Creatine, like whey, is a good source of amino acids. It also supplies energy to the cells of the muscles in short spurts; just like the spurts of energy you undergo during forceful exercises like weight lifting. Creatine is found naturally in red meat and fish. Creatine supplements which can be purchased in powder, liquid, and pill form, can increase the natural creatine levels in the body.

3. Glutamine – Glutamine can help add to and maintain existing muscle mass, help with the growth of muscles, and help you stay healthy if you are on a rigorous bodybuilding regimen. Glutamine is what is known as a non-essential amino acid, and is important for anyone who wants to gain and maintain good health. Non-essential amino acids are produced in the body. Glutamine supplements will enhance the natural level.

4. Multi-vitamins – Any good multi-vitamin supplement that supplies the recommended daily amount (RDA) of essential vitamins and minerals should be enough to support your bodybuilding routine. However, there are those that believe in using vitamin supplements that are geared specifically toward bodybuilding. These multi-vitamins have well beyond the RDA required for most people. The thought is that these stronger supplements increase the antioxidant and health benefits and are more helpful to athletes.

5. Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) – "Good fat", like polyunsaturated fats are made from corn oils, sunflower oils, flaxseed oils and certain fish oils. We refer to them as essential since the body does not produce them. Unlike "bad" saturated fats, these essential fatty acids can have a positively effect your cholesterol levels. EFAs are important for building muscle because they help the body build other fatty acids that are needed to sustain lean muscle growth.
