Body Mass Index

What is BMI?

BMI (body mass index) is a formula used to assess a person's body weight in relation to height. It's an indirect measure of body composition and it correlates highly with body fat in most people. Weight (in kilograms) is divided by height (in meters) squared (kg/m2).  The general guidelines for BMI values are as follows:

People with dense muscle mass may have a high BMI score but very little body fat.  See the American Heart Association for more information.
