Interview With Kevin Gianni

The Busy Person's Fitness Solution

Q. Can you give us some background about yourself?

I help people get into great shape and get more energy using a holistic approach to fitness and nutrition. Over the years, we’ve built a personal training business as well as a publishing house that provides cutting edge health information to thousands and thousands of people each year. My approach takes some of the best information about health and fitness and makes it easy for anyone to implement into their daily lives.

Q. What got you started in fitness?

A. I was always into sports. I played football, basketball and tennis and when I went to college decided I wanted to focus on extracurricular activities so I didn’t want to play sports. What I did do was continue to work out. But during those times, I wasn’t getting any results because I was eating poorly, not sleeping and frankly partying way too much.

It wasn’t until after college that I started to get the results I wanted. I cleaned up my diet and my lifestyle and finally started to look good. I also spent plenty of time in the gym and people would be asking me what I was doing. That was my first indication that maybe I’d be good at actually making a living in fitness and health.

Q. What is it about fitness that you love so much?

A. What I love about fitness is how it makes you feel. When I was eating poorly and not taking care of myself, I didn’t know how bad I felt on a regular basis. Good fitness and nutrition will put you to the next level. It increases your energy and the ability of your mind to create amazing things. Good fitness and nutrition will also remind you of how far you’ve come when you happen to slip up and eat something that’s not great for you. It’s like a self regulator.

Q. What adversities have you had to overcome?

A. There was a time in my life when I was not as energetic and enthusiastic as I am now. I was lazy, tired, worn out and spent way too much time hanging out with the wrong crowd. It was right after college, I was broke and I didn’t like my job. Life sucked.

One morning, I literally peeled my head off the pillow and realized that there had to be something better than the life I was living. It was one of those moments when you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach that you have to do something—even if you don’t know what to do.

So I took action. I started to take better care of myself, I started running more and most of all I started feeling better. And from that point on I never really looked back. The changes that I made in my life, now help me teach others to break out of their slumps. It’s a challenging and rewarding job.

Q. What are your favorite and least favorite exercises?

A. Favorite exercise is definitely trail running. I’ve run 4 marathons (2 in the woods) and plenty of other smaller races in the last few years. I don’t necessarily love it for the fitness side—I love it for the peace and quiet it brings me. I also get killer ideas when I’m out alone on the trails that I can use for my business and personal life. When I’m training in the woods, I’ll grab on to branches and do pull-ups, drop down and do pushups or do jump squats for 20-40 yards as well. It’s a great way to build strength workouts into my training so I can make time for everything else I need to do like run our personal training business and our publishing house.

Q. What are your tips for the beginner, intermediate and advanced?

A. Beginner – start slow and only do the exercises that you like. You won’t keep at it if you’re doing routines that bore you or don’t fire you up.

Intermediate – Plateaus are OK. Switch it up. You don’t need to do the same thing over and over again. When you hit a plateau ask yourself if you need a little time to rest up. I’ve heard way too many weight lifters and fitness enthusiasts say that they over did it once and now their shoulder, or back or knees are shot.

Advanced – Way to go. You’ve made it a habit. I’d suggest if you’re doing a bunch of weight training to take it to the floor with bodyweight exercises. This will literally transform your strength from single plane to multi-plane helping you build more dynamic strength for whatever you do. You’ll also be amazed at what muscles you will work… even if you’ve been lifting for 10-20 years.

Q. Where do you stand on the use of steroids and supplements?

A. We don’t need steroids at all. Most people want to be strong, lean and cut up. The good news is that with great nutrition, you don’t have to overbuild, you can trim up and really get great results. I think what many people do is that their nutrition is so-so (they think it’s good) and then they build and build and build because they want to get ripped. I better approach is to keep up with a great nutrition plan and you’ll trim up, without having to spend hours in the gym (unless you want to!)

As for supplements, I’m a naturalist, so I like extracts and whole food supplements. Juicing is also a great way to get nutrients in concentrated form. The supplements I take regularly now are B-Complex (due to my mainly raw and vegan diet), Vitamin C extract, digestive enzymes, and fish oil (due to the availability of the Omega-3 oils as compared to vegetarian sources).

Q. What are your future goals?

A. My future fitness goal is to run a 100 mile trail race. I put this off for the last two years, but in the next 2-3 years this will be my focus. Personal goal is to continue to spread the word of good health in as many ways as possible. I know how it feels to be down and miserable and I know how good nutrition and health can bring anyone out of it—so that’s my mission.

Q. What is the toughest part about fitness for you?

A. Getting out and running in the winter. I live in the northeast and it’s tough to run in the snow up here. I do my bodyweight routines at home during the cold months, but when spring rolls around I’m itching to get out and run full time again. My wife and I are actually going to move in a year or so to a warmer place just because of this… it’s that important to us.
