What is body mass index (bmi)

Posted by: Lisa

I want to know what body mass index is and what is it used for.

It's basically a number representing your height to weight ratio. It's largely inaccurate as a fitness indicator because it does not take into account bodyfat levels or muscle mass. For example, former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield is considered morbidly obese based on his BMI. Now anyone who has seen him knows he is in incredible shape and is in no way obese.
