Mike Mentzer Powerlifting Training

Mike Mentzer Powerlifting

Posted by: Paul

Q. Did Mike Mentzer ever do powerlifting and would heavy duty training be a good powerlifting program?

A. Yes, Mike Mentzer did do powerlifting workouts when he was a teenager, after he trained at home for a year he was introduced to John Myers a powerlifter and his workout partner, Russell Hertzog an Olympic lifter, they invited Mike to train with them and Mike learned how to train heavy on the three powerlifts, the squat, bench press and deadlift, and the two Olympic lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk.

As a matter of fact at only 15 years old Mike had a raw bench press of 370 pounds at a body weight of 165 pounds, not too bad for a kid who was only a freshmen in high school. Mike always said he considered himself a strength athlete as well as a bodybuilder.

And also yes, Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty training is very good for powerlifting. Heavy Duty is designed to build strength in order to build muscle, it concentrates on good form which is a must for powerfliting.

Here's how to do Mike Mentzer training for Powerliftng:

Strip your routine down to the squat, bench press and deadlift, along with maybe a few assistance exercises.

Lower your reps to the 3 to 5 range working up with a few progressively heavier warm up sets and then do one all out set per exercise.

Do all reps in perfect powerlifting form, with a distinct pause in the bottom position .

Allow enough rest to recover and grow stronger before your next workout.

Try the above and you will see all your lifts going up at a rate that will surprise you.
