Okay, here's the scoop. My training partner and I have been training very hard for quite a while now. Both of us are really starting to feel the affects. He has been telling me for quite some time to take a break. Well, that's easier said than done for me and I am sure that many of you are the same way. I finally found an excuse to take a week off training without feeling too bad about it. I am going to Indianapolis for the Brickyard 400 Nascar Winston Cup race the weekend of August 5. So I decided I am going to take that entire week off from weight training to live like a "normal" person.
FIRST: It is very important to take time off occasionally. Your body needs the time to recuperate. Even if you are not over-training, your body needs time to rest. It cannot just keep going at the same pace forever. You will eventually "hit a brick wall" and your progress will stop.
SECOND: It is a great way to shock your muscles. For example, I haven't taken any time off since the same mentioned weekend last year when I only skipped two days. So, I am sure you can imagine how sore and shocked my muscles will be when I first come back to the weight room a week later. If you keep it controlled by planning one-week layoffs from the weight room (two to three times per year), your body will thank you by continuing to respond to resistance training. Your mind will thank you by keeping you fired up to get in the weight room and give it your best.
