Bodybuilding is 85% Nutrition

Posted by: Ron

Vince Gironda is often quoted saying that bodybuilding is 85% nutrition.

Pay as much (or more) attention to your nutrition as you do to your training

It’s a common misconception that you can eat anything as long as you “work it off” in the gym. When you’re in your teens and twenties, you can get away with eating whatever you want. Your body has plenty of reserves. Your cells are turning over really quickly and you only had a couple of decades of exposure to this toxic world we live in.

As you get into your 30s and 40s, the reserves are drying up and the buffer is wearing thinner. Unless you put in as much or more than you withdraw from your health account, it could be all downhill after those two decades of your life.

Since millions of your cells are dying every second and your body is making new cells based on the blueprint of the previous cells, it only makes common sense to keep that blueprint as flawless as possible. Unfortunately, external circumstances are constantly bombarding your system and altering/aging your cells ever so slightly each day. Over the years that adds up. Much like how the Colorado river took a “few” years to carve out the Grand Canyon, your cells are constantly being carved by your environment and stressors.

Going back to bodybuilding. Lifting heavy weights repeatedly is a stressor on the body. The main way to combat it is to replenish the expended energy and nutrients with high quality food. Vince knew this way before the current wellness movement. He advocated organic food and quality supplements well before most of today’s health gurus were alive. It’s a lot easier to eat clean and stay lean than to have to cram and spend endless hours on a treadmill that literally speeds up your aging. 85% of how you muscular and lean you are is determined by what you put in your mouth. That’s scary and empowering at the same time.

Keep that in mind next time you think about eating low quality processed food just because it’s convenient. There is next to no nutrition in it. Would you want your next muscle cell in your biceps to be made out of a muffin or donut or would you rather it be made out of high quality, grass fed beef or bison? Which do you think your body has an easier time converting to lean and healthy muscle tissue?

Be as particular about your food intake and nutrition as you are about your next chest or back workout.
