Complex Carbohydrates: Not All Carbs Are The Same

Posted by Mike

Like cholesterol, there are good carbohydrates and bad. The so-called good carbohydrates are the complex carbohydrates. These foods are natural, whole grains that have not been chemically refined and stripped of nutrients. They are high in fiber, which promotes elimination of waste products, a process that is essential to good health. They also provide a valuable and important source of energy to the body on a daily basis. Foods that contain complex carbohydrates include whole grain breads and cereals, rice, beans and vegetables.

Simple carbohydrates tend to be less healthy, particularly when they are in the form of refined sugary foods with little nutritional value. These, unfortunately, are the carbohydrates that most people tend to over-consume, leading to obesity and its many health problems.

Refined sugars also promote tooth decay and cause blood sugar swings that can cause irritability, jitteriness and even problems with attention and concentration. Though there are many dietary guidelines that recommend getting the majority of calories from carbohydrates, very few of these carbohydrate calories should be in the form of refined sugars.

With the low carbohydrate diet craze in full swing, you may believe that all carbohydrates are bad for your health. While people do tend to eat far too many carbohydrate-rich foods, particular “empty” calorie snack foods like cookies, cake and candy, not all carbohydrates are the same.
