Counting Calories vs Eating Healthy
There is no question that counting calories is one of the best ways
to control body weight and body fat. It is a tool that many use to
slim down effectively. However, many people make the mistake of
thinking it is a total cure-all for the diet. In fact it is not a
complete tool at all.
Calorie Counting Not Complete
The reason calorie counting is not an all-in-all manner in which to
address the diet is that the calorie counting approach only targets
the calories and nothing else. This controls the calories, but does
not address what is in the calories, and that matters. It matters a
lot. The elements that make up the calories can be good or bad.
To showcase how calorie counting can come up short in the nutritional
arena, consider that someone is on a daily calorie allowance of 1,500
calories. And they allow themselves 1,500 calories of sugar – nothing
else but sugar. It wouldn’t take too long for their body to collapse
because they are not getting the nutrients it requires. Sugar doesn’t
contain the vitamins, minerals and other key elements the body
requires to rebuild itself and function at top levels. So a pure
sugar diet would be very dangerous, even though the person was in
fact hitting their calorie intake target.
Granted, the sugar example is extreme, but it makes the point very
well that what the calories you eat consist of does matter and makes
a big difference in the results you get from any diet.
Healthy Eating
Counting calories should never trump healthy eating. In fact you can
mix the two for best effect – make sure the calories you eat are
healthy. But many people think that calorie counting along is
enough. It is not. If you want to maximize your body, you have to
make sure that those calories are healthy.
