Diet Soda - Good or Bad for Bodybuilding and Fitness?

Does diet soda help you or harm You? At first glance it would seem that diet soda isn't a big deal - after all, minimal calories are involved. However, look below the surface and there are some issues to consider.

More than calories

There is more to be concerned with than calories in a diet soda. Someone may argue that diet sodas are so low in calories that they won't hurt your midsection. However, diet sodas contain elements that are not healthy for the body. Many feature an artificial sweetener to get to that low calorie number and some of these artificial sweeteners may have a negative effect on your body.

Diet sodas are not full of good things. Consider diet Coke, which contains carbonated water, caramel color, aspartame, phosphoric acid, potassium citrate, natural flavors, citric acid, and caffeine. Not a lot of healthy elements there. And some diet sodas contain sodium benzoate. This preservative, when combined with citric acid, becomes carcinogenic. Unfortunately some sodas combine this pair.

The idea of not gaining fat from diet sodas also needs to be reexamined as studies have shown that those who drink diet sodas don't drop weight at all and may actually work to make the body fatter. So some factor is creating a fat issue and it is tied in to the diet soda.

For all of these reasons it is not a good idea to drink diet sodas whether you are a bodybuilder or not. If you drink soda, make it non-diet and don't do it very often. Choose a soda that has real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, which will limit your selection options. There are some natural sodas that have good ingredients that are the best way to go if you just have to have a drink.
