What is a Healthy Sweetener

A Healthy Sweetener?   Yes!

Are you avoiding sweets like they were the plague? That’s smart as
eating too much sugar and other related sweeteners can cause 
problems for your body. Excess sugar is stored as fat on the body, 
and taking lots of sugar at once can cause a real spike in your 
metabolism. In addition to these factors, there are the sweeteners
that are even worse – high fructose corn syrup, for instance, which
is really bad for the body.  You want to always avoid this 
artificial sweetener.

In spite of the negative connotation that sweeteners have, there are
a couple that actually have some benefits. Honey has some medicinal 
properties as well as several nutrients. And there is another 
sweetener that has an even better nutritional profile – blackstrap 
molasses. 

Beneficial Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap molasses is very beneficial for your body – it carries a
strong dose of nutrients.  You can instantly upgrade your oatmeal by
using some blackstrap molasses.  The blackstrap molasses contains a 
host of nutrients, including  copper and manganese. It has calcium 
and magnesium as well as a good amount of potassium. Additionally, 
blackstrap molasses has iron, selenium and vitamin B6.  It even 
contains a bit of niacin and zinc. That’s quite a package, 
especially for a sweetener.  

Why don’t other sweeteners have such nutrients? They did originally
have some, but they are all removed in the refining and processing 
of the sugar and derivatives so that only the carbohydrates are 
left, without any other nutrients. This refining actually makes the
sweetener worse for your body. 

You don’t always have to eat a dull diet when you are trying to eat
healthy. Use blackstrap molasses to add some taste to your food – 
healthy taste. It goes great on cereal and you can experiment 
with using it on or in other food items as well.  Eating sweet 
isn’t always a downer!
