Prohormones and Prosteroids Use in Bodybuilding
You may have heard about prosteroids and prohormones being used in bodybuilding. But what exactly are prohormones and prosteroids, are they legal and do they actually work?
What Are Prohormones?
A prohormone (or pro hormone) is a substance that is a precursor to a hormone, usually having minimal hormonal effect by itself it usually requires an enzymic or other chemical interaction before becoming an active hormone in the body.
The use of prohormones became popular among bodybuilders, since the effects were believed to be similar (though less drastic) to those achieved through the use of steroids, including gains in lean muscle mass and strength.
What Are Prosteroids?
A prosteroid (or pro steroid) is an active steroidal hormone and needs no conversion, and was believed to possess anabolic activity in itsunaltered state.
The term prosteroid was coined by the supplement industry. Prosteroids for a short time were sold as over the counter dietary supplements, before they were banned.
Prohormones and Prosteroids Banned
Senate bill 2195 passed the Senate Oct. 6th, 2004. This bill reclassified listed prohormones and prosteroids as anabolic steroids and makes them controlled substances. The bill was signed into law by President Bush and the ban became effective 90 days after.
