CHEAP SMITH MACHINES
Posted by: Les (flerickson@salisbury.edu)
I'm thinking about buying a "low-cost" smith machine for use at home. Sears sells them online for 200-400 dollars. Does anyone have any experience with non-commercial grade smith machines? Are they smooth to use and functional? Good enough for home use? I'm not a heavy lifter. I'm unable to try one out before buying because I live out in the sticks and Sears does not have them in stock (but will order them for free); I could send it back if not satisfied.
thanks, Les
Re: CHEAP SMITH MACHINES
Posted by: Cale Dansbee (cdansbee@san.rr.com)
Les, unless you are really wanting to use the smith machine, I would recommend getting a good set of dumbbells (5-50lbs). smith machines tend to restrict the natural arc of movement seen in both squat and bench press exercises.

Re: BODYBUILDING
Posted by: Trapzilla (brian@kolorgraphics.com)
You need to get around 2 grams of protein per lb of bodyweight. I had a hard time gaining at your age also. You will need to eat 6-7 meals per day. Make sure you have some type of snack in between lunch and practice. You can email me if you want to chat. I started training @ 15yrs old. I was 119 lbs @ 5'10" and I am now 242lbs, 5'10" with 11% bf.
Also, you have to train your butt off and don't blow it.

I WANNA LOSE WEIGHT!! HELP!!
Posted by: Jamie Laska (krazyangel0404@yahoo.com)
I am seriouly overweight. My doctor told me to lose weight or i could die. Iam only 23 yrs old and have so much to do in my life. I've tried endless amounts of diets and weight loss programs, and nothing works. Please help!
Re: I WANNA LOSE WEIGHT!! HELP!!
Posted by: Mark, personal trainer (senseimanthony@aol.com)
You want to lose weight fast?
Cardio aint gonna cut it (totally)
The only fast way to really change body composition is to change what and how you eat. Period.
Question:
How many workout addicts do you see spending hours in the gym week after week but never get the lean, ripped look?
Answer:
Most of them.
Why? Because they never modify what and how they eat!
Firstly, you need to eat frequently. Small, balanced, portion-controlled meals every 2.5 hours is a good start. That will light a fire under your matabolism, speeding it up to an inferno.
However...eat for what you are GOING TO BE DOING within the next two hours. NOT what you've already done. That's history...
For instance, you should only eat LOW GLYCEMIC carbs only before exercise. (eliminate high glycemic carbs altogether) If you are NOT going to do any exercise within the next two hours of your day, stick with a protien snack.
Carbs turn to fat quick if you don't use them, and let me tell you, you can't use up a plate of pasta by doing a half-hour of "cardio" on an exercise bike. FORGETABOUTIT!!
Also...start building muscle by getting into a weight training program under the supervision of a qualified trainer.
Muscle takes more energy to maintain, so your metabolism does speed up if you have more muscle on your bones.
Hope that helps!

NECK EXERCISE

I'm a lean / well toned 40 something male....with strong upper body.
I'd like to develop a more muscular neck.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Re: NECK EXERCISE
Posted by: Scott Ismari (ismari@ctnet.net)
You can incorperate heavy barbell shrugs into yoru routine. Use a power rack for this. These will help build up your traps. You can also do weighted head raises from the front and sides, if you have access to a headcap at your gym that you can suspend a weight from. I advise staying away from any machine that uses your own applied resistance against to avoid too much pressure to the neck and damaging it.

CHEST WORKOUT
Posted by: wayne (wayne_smith11@yahoo.com)
when i started bodybuiling about 4 months ago my chest got bigger for the first three months and stopped growing for the last month can you explain why?
i also eat and drink quite alot of prtein
Re: CHEST WORKOUT
Posted by: Michael Clements (ironman_375@yahoo.com)
I'm 15, almost 16 and have a 330 pound bench...squats increase bloodflow to the rest of your body and ( this may sound stupid) kinda make your blood vessels bigger so that your muscles take in more blood. Now, the way i figger it is: you eat protien, protein goes into your bloodstream, more blood to your muscles, more protein to your muscles.

WANT TO GAIN MUSCLE

Im 14 and i need to gain weight for football next year. im a wide reciever/free safety. Im playing varsity and currently in 9th grade. im playing basketball right now for JV. I way about 155pounds and im 6 foot. ive never worked out. i want a work out plan and running plan to help get in good shape and stronger. i also want a faster 40. please help me.
Re: WANT TO GAIN MUSCLE
Posted by: jhale(jhale5471@yahoo.com)
When I was your age I had the same problem. What worked for me was to increase my protein intake, be aware of my nutrition like a hawk, and exercise 4 -5 days a week in the gym. Get a good lifting companion that has had great success. Not some friend that will only show up when they feel like it. If you really want to stand out, you are going to have to become dedicated like you never have been before. Going to the gym and eating right will have to become a major commitment. Keep it up and you will reach your goals.

SQUATS
Posted by: Steve (djevelhund8893@yahoo.com)
I love to do squats and have been messing with many variations. I constantly struggle with my form. I find that ATG squats put more pressure on my knees that just parallel squats. I am really frustrated with my results. Any advice?
Re: SQUATS
Posted by: Jason (jasonh@classicbroncos.comm)
For your knee pain, I urge you to try an excercise variation that may help. First, incorporate knee extensions into your workout. The variation is this - On the way up, point your toes in; on the way down point your toes out. It is pretty simple and it worked for me, and btw you don't do these heavy.

SQUATS
Posted by: Grant (headbustin52@yahoo.com)
I have been working out for around 2 years. Im in highschool and my coach wants us to go a little bit below parallel on our squats. I have a hard time even geetting in that position (i kno i need to stretch) but it is really hard to gain weight for me squatting like that. any tips on form or the best way to increase my max?
Re: SQUATS
Posted by: Jason (jasonh@classicbroncos.com)
I would tell your coach that going below parallel will not necessarily bring more muscle/power to your legs.
I have worked with some fine strength coaches over the years as well as being a certified personal trainer through the NSCA and 1/4 squats are just as good. I even have talked to doctors about this issue and they agree that 1/4 squats are just fine. And yes, stretch before, during and after workouts!
Re: SQUATS
Posted by: ryan (ryan@lundfitness.com)
Grant, please don't be "one of them people" who pile on the weight and only do partial reps. It is not only dangerous, it is also a waste of time, and you'll be the guy in the gym that everybody laughs about. The correct way of performing a squat is to go down to parallel... As with any exercise, a complete range of motion is key. Decrease the weight that you're using if necessary and use good form; head up, back straight, etc. and do full squats.

BENCHING AND LOSING
Posted by: dan da man (pimpdaddydanny7@aol.com)
im a 14 year old , 180 pound freshman and i wanted to know . i want to lose weight while i gain muscle at the same time how can i do that.i want to loose from 10 to 25 pounds how do i do this ? thanks
Re: BENCHING AND LOSING
Posted by: Jason (jasonh@classicbroncos.com)
Diet is every bit as important as your routine, and I recommend a low-carb diet.
For the routine: Do 2-3 whole-body workouts per week, of basic multi-joint exercises. Also do 2-3 cardio workouts per week. Pick-up a subscription to a good fitness magazine, read-up and learn as much as you can. It is a continual learning process. The more you learn: the more you realize how little you know.

BENCH INCREASE

I'm 15 and I've been lifting for about a year now nand I started out repping 95lbs and I now rep 125 but I've been there for about 3 months and I cant seem to increase. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Re: BENCH INCREASE
Posted by: jordan kurtti (kurtti_j@hotmail.com)
I sugest ur start squatting more my science teacher who lifts almost everyday , he is a former boxer told my friends and I that squats build muscle in every part of your bofy. he told us that it has somethig to do with the hormones or something but he said that most people avoid squats but its the best thing u can possibly do. my friend a who lifts eveery day has hit 215 now on his bench and he just turned 15 he squats alot and benches he is also on varsity everything he was starting quaterback on our varsity football team and he made our varsity basketball team which is hard to do even if your a junior so squating helped him and me alot.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but you can't really do anything to make yourself taller.
Re: HOW CAN I?
Posted by:Paul Hussey (pjhhulk@hotmail.com)
There is no way to make yourself taller it's all down to genitics. But you can make your arms bigger I myself am 6'0 with 19inch Biceps and I used to have samll arms, but I do a full range of bicep work outs staring with a 5lbs weight of 50reps each arm then go on to a heaver weight. I spend atleast an houre a day on my biceps. Good luck to you you are still young and have a lot of growing to do.
